| Pollen character evolution in yams (Dioscorea: Dioscoreaceae) was investigated in relation to the phylogeny obtained from a recent combined analysis of rbcL and matK gene sequences. The following characters were evaluated: pollen size, aperture number, sexine ornamentation, perforation density, and orbicule presence or absence. Continuous characters were coded using the gap weighting method. Each character was optimized using MacClade onto a tree selected at random from analyses based on molecular data of Wilkin et al. The results indicate that in Dioscorea pollen size decreases in the more derived clades. The latter observation may be related to the evolution of annually replaced tubers. | Abstract The Passeriformes is the most diverse and cytogenetically well-known clade of birds, comprising approximately 5,000 species. The sooty-fronted spinetail (Synallaxis frontalis Aves: Furnariidae) species, which belongs to the order Passeriformes, is typically found in South America, where it is widely distributed. Polymorphisms provide genetic variability, important for several evolutionary processes, including speciation and adaptation to the environment. The aim of this work was to analyze the possible cytotypes and systemic events involved in the species polymorphism. | Research on the laws controlling the shoreline equilibrium shape has been one important topic of studying the evolvement and stabilization of sandy coasts. After a brief review of the progress on the equilibrium shape laws research, five models are introduced in detail. Advantages and disadvantages of these models are then discussed, which leads to the conclusion that the empirical formula integrating with analysis of mechanism should be the future direction of study on the headland-bay equilibrium shape laws. Finally, the importance of the study on the equilibrium shape of headland-bay in China is also discussed. |
